Because of the trends in society today we feel that the following points from Luther’s Small Catechism need to be emphasised. Quotations are taken from the 1991 edition.
1. Verbal inspiration and inerrancy.
“The Bible is the “Holy Scripture” because God the Holy Spirit gave to His chosen writers the thoughts that they expressed and the words that they wrote (verbal inspiration). Therefore, the Bible is God’s own Word and truth, without error (inerrancy).” (Question 3)
2. The Law (The Ten Commandments)
The Law (The Ten Commandments) serves the important purpose of showing us our sin. In this way it acts as a mirror. The Law also acts as a curb controlling violent outbursts of sin and keeps order in the world. The third use, which is largely ignored today needs to be emphasised. It is the duty of the church to do this.
“The Law teaches us Christians what we should and should not do to lead a God pleasing life (a guide). The power to live according to the Law comes from the Gospel.” (Question 77C.
3. Creation.
“In six days God created all things, out of nothing, simply by His word.” (Question 97)
4. Evolution.
“By faith Christians believe what the Word of God teaches about creation. Evolutionary theorise are not scientifically verifiable.” (Question 105)
5. Ecumenical tendencies.
“We should avoid false teachers, false churches, and all organisations that promote a religions contrary to God’s Word.” (Question 179C)
6. Women pastors.
“Congregations are to call men who are well qualified personally and spiritually to be their pastors.” (Question 278)
7. Open/Closed Communion.
“The Sacrament must not be given to those of a different confession of faith, since the Lord’s Supper is a testimony of the unity of faith.” (Question 305C)
